The difference between Cookie Cutter Coaching & Collaborative Coaching

First up this is NOT a “my coaching is better than her coaching” post. I am absolutely sick to death of seeing the polarity and call out culture in our industry as a marketing tool. It’s destructive so I refuse to partake in it.

The coaching industry is all about helping people succeed, ALL people, even fellow coaches in the industry, so sending a marketing email professing to help people succeed whilst simultaneously trashing someone else’s methodology / course / technique etc, just doesn’t quite sit right with me. Ya know what I mean?

Regardless, there are MANY different types of coaching, and I think all of them CAN be successful but it has to appropriate to the client and where they are in their journey.

One of the distinctions I’d like to help you make is the difference between cookie-cutter coaching and collaborative coaching, because they BOTH have their place.

🍪 Cookie-cutter coaching, by definition, is where you learn ONE method, ONE tool, ONE strategy, or from ONE person who has had great success using ONE specific thing.

This can be amazing if the “thing” you’re trying to master is the very thing they’re offering, or if you’re the type of person who likes to learn and implement in a more linear style, i.e. one thing at a time, try and test, rinse & repeat, until you fin
d THE thing that works for you.

🍪 I see cookie-cutter coaching working quite well for early stage entrepreneurs too, i.e. those who would just prefer to be told what to do, or have a system to follow or copy, because they aren’t yet at the point where they have deepened their faith & trust ENOUGH to follow their own intuition. Perhaps it’s just a confidence thing, or an experience thing. It’s certainly NOT a thing to judge in yourself or others.

For years I subscribed only to cookie-cutter coaching, programmes and systems that I could simply learn and implement, coaches who only knew their way (with great success) and had things I could learn from them. It was great! It helped me get to the 6-figure mark.

Beyond the 6-figure mark, things started to change, and I realised there was a lot more to it than strategy and copying what had worked for others. A shift happened, and so I started seeking out collaborative coaching. I’ve had many different experiences of collaborative coaching, and 15 years of business experience trying all the things, not to mention several multi-6 and 7-figure companies as a result of everything I’ve learned, implemented, tried, tested, failed at (lol), won at, and expanded.

👯‍♀️ SO, for me collaborative coaching very much looks like a two way street.

👯‍♀️ Here’s what YOU, the client, contributes:

  • Your why beyond your why
  • Your big dreams and visions
  • Your mission and drive
  • Your what’s working for you and what isn’t
  • Your truth and honesty
  • The “how” you want to make things happen (if you have an ideal version of that)
  • Your aspirations for what you want your business to look like, how you want to show up and serve, what you want to charge, the impact you want to make, and frankly all the details of your best life and best business if you could have it anyway you wanted, i.e. the way that makes your heart burst with fulfilment
  • Personal responsibility and commitment to doing the work we do TOGETHER
  • Open communication so we’re always on the same page of what is and isn’t working

👯‍♀️ Here’s what I then contribute to our relationship:

  • 15 years experience trying it ALL the ways
  • The wealth of my knowledge when it comes to strategy, science, spirituality and self-work
  • All the ways in which your vision can be made possible (some of which I will be doing myself, and others which I won’t because they’re not right for me but could be amazing for you)
  • Accountability and a kick ass team to support you
  • A sounding board for your ideas, a mirror for your triggers, and a kick up the backside when you need it
  • My extensive network of people, services, & potential collaborators established through years of being in the business
  • My Divine channel and spirit team (until I’ve helped you connect to yours with such clarity you don’t need mine)
  • My belief in you (I only work with people I can really get behind and support)
  • Boundaries, and modelling a way of being that is similar to what you desire too

That last point is key for me. Some clients and coaches aren’t the right fit because the coach models a way of BEING that the client doesn’t aspire to, and that’s perfectly OK too.

So let me be clear on my way of ‘being’ as it stands today in April 2021 so you can get a sense of whether collaborative coaching might be right for you, OR if you’d prefer to go the cookie-cooker route and simply immerse yourself in one of my self-study programmes (and of course the awesome community that comes with being in the Ask H world).

  • I recently took the plunge to be a full time mummy to our 2 and a half year old (she’s not in nursery due to covid making waiting lists ridiculous)
  • I retired my husband last year so he could help me out in the business, but also pursue a career change for himself
  • I’m pregnant with our 2nd child and plan to take a 3 month maternity leave (I took 10 days last time, LOL!)
  • I run 3 businesses: my coaching company (Ask Harriette), a music school, and a dance & fitness studios
  • I have several teams in place to do all the things I’m either no good at, or just don’t want to do
  • I do have time freedom and moolah freedom BUT I’m head over heels in love with my coaching work, to the point I actually have to be dragged away from my laptop and my phone 😂 so you could say I work “hard” because I do put a lot of hours in (despite now being full time mummy too), but honestly it does not feel like hard work because I love it so damn much
  • I’d do what I do even if I wasn’t being paid
  • When the world isn’t under the control of a bubonic plague, I typically travel several times a year to all corners of the world, in first class 5* style
  • I’m very health conscious, I work out (even though I’m not a huge fan of it), and I don’t get out of bed before 8.30am (just not a morning person)
  • I’m a chronic over-giver but I definitely don’t under charge. Still working on my boundaries but hey I’m not perfect!
  • I’m a High Priestess of Light and an incredibly smart & successful business woman. I like to think of myself as a little bit spiritual, a little bit practical, and hell bent on a mission to make shit happen and change the world
  • Education is my JAM. I love teaching, all the things, from businesses strategy, to deep spirituality, to science and quantum physics, to all the self-work. I’ve spent most of my career teaching and coaching adults, but the BIG dream is eventually to build my own education foundation so this life-changing stuff can be taught to kids in school so they don’t end up as messed up as we are!
  • I’m a mission woman… I work as “hard” as I do because I’m so passionate about actually changing the world in a tangible way, so the next generation can experience something we never could

All that said to say…. I am on a COLLABORATIVE mission to bring the true meaning of abundance back to Planet Earth. The true meaning of abundance to me means both spiritual wealth and material wealth FOR ALL OF US… adults, kids, men, women… a world without division. I know I’m bonkers, but I certainly can’t do it on my own, and I know some of you reading this have equally bonkers missions to change the world, and go above and beyond simply making money for yourselves.

WE have big HUMANITARIAN work to do. This isn’t just coaching. This is a collective mission to change the world! We can do it together!

Are you in?!
